Shipping your products to a fulfilment house that you trust is important. A new government law is being introduced in 2019; with this law, all fulfilment houses have to undergo an inspection, meet government standards and only then will they be approved and put on an official government list. Being on this official list legally permits the accepted business to store products, take shipments and have clients that are based outside of the EU. Here is what we know so far about the incoming government law:
Earlier in 2018, HMRC announced that they were launching a scheme to put those who ship or receive imported goods from outside of the EU under the microscope. Trying to crack down on evaders not declaring the correct VAT, customs duty fees or proper quantities on shipments coming into the UK for cheaper import fees, heavy fines and punishments will be introduced when the scheme fully launches in April, 2019.
All UK based companies that store imported goods on behalf of non-EU businesses, or where goods are imported from outside of the EU must apply for this scheme and then be approved to continue operating with imported goods.
Those who have not been approved and continue to trade outside of these rules on or after April 1st will be at risk of fines climbing to £10,000 and a possible criminal conviction to top it off. Companies that aren't registered to this scheme by April may face a penalty each month until their application is completed and they meet the standards of HMRC to be approved.
